CHAIRS REPORT (CW)

In 2019/20 Moa Kids has continued to operate at full capacity as well as having a full complement of teaching staff.

The focus over the last 12 months has been a combination of upgrades, which has included the nursery outdoor area upgrade, as well as investment in our staff. The focus on staff wellbeing and professional development has been the most important investment Moa Kids makes. To have well supported staff makes for a well-supported centre with happy children.

Obviously, with Covid-19 there have been a number of challenges which have required great resilience from the staff and centre. I cannot commend the teachers enough on how well they managed the lockdown, and the post lockdown return of the children, they really have done a fantastic job.

We are in the final stages of renegotiating our lease with Christchurch City Council, which will provide long term stability to the centre and ensure that our investments are worthwhile.

Committee

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the committee for their commitment throughout the year to supporting Moa Kids.  Being a community governed preschool the committee is an essential function of how Moa Kids is run, and we appreciate the time the volunteer committee has put into the governance of the centre. A special mention to our Treasurer Steve who continuously does an excellent job.

This year I am sad that Abi, Shelley and Suzanne are stepping down, we all thank you for your contribution.

Looking Forward

In the year ahead things we will be focussing on is continuous improvement of the centre as a ‘full centre and continuing to invest in our staff. This means we are looking at upgrading infrastructure within the centre, making sure the staff have a comfortable rest area off the floor, and that the office is fit for purpose.

Finally, just again a big thank you to all the staff at Moa Kids who do such great job in caring for our children.

Moved: Carly Waddleton (CW)

Seconded: Suzanne Craig (SC)

TREASURER’S REPORT (SW)

Year ended 31 March 2020

  • Another successful year, surplus of $50k in line with last year and our budget.

  • A small Government funding rate increase, the first for many years, helped funding increase over the previous year.

  • Wages were 8% up on previous year as we were fully staffed for the full year. Costs for relievers were slightly down accordingly.

  • Most other costs were in line with the previous year.

  • Moa Kids was closed for the final week of March and received the Government Wage Subsidy. All staff were paid full pay for the full lockdown period.

  • A pandemic insurance claim has also been made.

  • From December 2019 the Centre ceased to pay rent and did not receive a similar rent grant from the City Council. A new lease is accordingly being put in place.

  • Accumulated reserves increased by $50k accordingly.

  • The annual audit has not commenced yet due to our having Covid 19 restrictions. Annual audited accounts will be available in July.

  • The Centre remains in a good financial position.
