CHAIRS REPORT (CW)

Reflections

I was putting off writing this report, because this is my 4th and final AGM as chair, and my 7th year on the committee. In this time, things have changed a lot.

When I first started on the committee, the centre’s budget was projected to have a $80,000 deficit for the year, we were very low on numbers for children, and there were serious concerns about the long-term viability of keeping Moa’s open. But together, the staff and the committee knew that we had to keep going and keep the centre open, because we knew then, and still know now that Moa Kids is different. At Moa Kids we don’t just say we are a community centre, we live it.

Consider where we are now, a financially strong centre that can afford refurbishments and a staff centric budget. Now I am certainly not attributing these significant changes down to me. They are most certainly the result of a hard-working team of teachers, strong leadership from the centre management team, a dedicated committee and a steady but stern hand from our treasurer. What this has taught me, is that when we come together as a community, as a whanau, our passion and enthusiasm can achieve great things. So although I am sad to be leaving the Moa Kids whanau, I’m so pleased to be leaving the centre in a strong position to make the best decisions for its staff and tamariki. Not to mention, it’s not bad to leave when the awesome team have just won ECE of the year!

Looking Forward

I can honestly say that the budget we have approved for this year, is the most staff-centric and wellbeing focused budget I could have hoped for, and I am so very proud. Given all the craziness of the last year with COVID and bush fires, I’m always in absolute awe of the stamina and resilience of the staff. Every day you walk into Moas there is a smiling face to greet you and your little one, there is someone to listen to you in the office, it is always a safe place. In the last 12 months, being safe has been more important than ever, when we as parents have so often felt unsafe, unsure or anxious. To ensure we give back to and look after the wellbeing of the incredible teaching staff, we have put in place a budget to take care of those who look after us and our families every day.

Goodbye and Good Luck

So, I just want to say a huge thank you to Hayley and Steve, it’s been a pleasure being a Chairperson with you both, and I’ve learnt so much. We’ve certainly worked through a variety of issues, emergencies, and obscure problems – and I wouldn’t have wanted to work through them with anyone else. Thank you also to Rrita, you’ve given above and beyond in your roles as Secretary and Fundraising, we wish you all the best in your next adventures.

Good luck to the new committee, Kylie will be a fantastic chairperson, don’t mess up that beautiful budget – or Steve will be on to you! If you ever need anything, I’m just across the park and always a phone call away.

Moved: Carly Waddleton (CW)

Seconded: Geneva Pritchard (GP)
