January & February 2016

Whoooooooo who can believe we are autumn already.   It has been a busy start to 2016 and Moa kids. We are delighted to welcome lots of new families to our preschool. Everyone is settling in to their new routine well and it is nice to have you all on board.

At the end of January we held our Open day for the year.  This was very successful, with new families coming in to see our new philosophy and also our freshly painted centre.  We have had many children start from this, which is always fantastic.  It was great to see existing families come along as well.  All the children seemed to enjoy exploring the preschool with their siblings and families and everyone even enjoyed a sausage on the bbq at the end as well J

At the end of last month we held our annual picnic/fish chip evening.  The weather was perfect for the event and it was great to see such a large turnout of families, so thank you to everyone who came along.  The children always find it super exciting to come back to preschool at night time.  It is also a great way for them to show off their preschool to siblings and families as well.

Our Murder Mystery event is all over for another year.  Thank you to all the families that came along and supported the evening, to the families who made desserts and to everyone that sold tickets.  I must say this was huge success in many ways.  A big thank you to the Event Committee that organised this event, there has been some wonderful feedback on how the entire evening was run, so a big pat on the back and a huge thank you for all your wonderful help.  The end result was of course even more exciting with us raising $4,576 in total.

This year we made a goal for grants and fundraising which you can see displayed in the foyer.  It will be very exciting to paint off the first goal of nearly $5000!

With the cooler months approaching us can we please remember to pack layers of clothing for your child/ren.  Remembering to clearly name any clothing you bring in to the centre.

This month Letisha and I will be heading away on a leadership course.  We are going at different times.  I am up first so will be away from the 7th of March and will return back to normal on Thursday 10th March.  Letisha will be then away Monday 14th March, returning Thursday 17th of March.  Zoe will be in the office her normal days while we away, so if you have questions or extra bookings, make sure you come and see her.

Just a friendly reminder on sign in and out times.  I have noticed this month families are forgetting to sign in and out.  Please make sure you do this.  Also writing the times your child is here, if your child is here early or later please make sure it is written in the sign out sheets.

Thank you to all the families that filled out the parent survey at the end of last year.  We have had some wonderful feedback.  These are also great to give us ideas for changes and also things we can improve on at Moa kids.  If you haven’t filled one out and would like to please let Zoe or I know.

You may have noticed we have had a bit of a change around in the foyer.  The parent library is now set up on the new book shelf.  Please make sure you have a look what we have, there are some fantastic books available for you to borrow.

Kind regards,
Hayley

Welcome to our new families

A big welcome to Hazel, Louie, Sophie, Indie, Arlo, Marisa and Harry.  It’s great to have you with us.

Farewell

We have said goodbye and happy school days to lots of our friends lately.  Ellie, Liam, Izzy, Isla and Sophia.  We wish them all the best with their next learning adventure J

Jasper has also left us as he has moved out of the area.  He has since headed off to a new preschool.  We wish him all the best too.

Staff News

As you are probably all still aware, Sharleen is still away on ACC.  We have had lots of children and parents ask about her return.  At this stage it will be next month which we are all super excited about.  We will keep you updated and posted if this changes.

Tracy has a well deserved holiday coming up.  She will be on annual leave form 21st March until 4th April.  We hope she has a great break!

Shelia had a wonderful break in the UK at Christmas.  She was also super excited to inform us she is now a Grandma to twin boys Monte and Miles.  Congratulations Sheila.

Reminders

  • Please remember to pack several changes of named clothes in your child’s bag.
  • We have noticed the odd chocolates and lollies for treat foods sneaking into the children’s lunchboxes.  Please remember we have a Gold Healthy Heart Award at the centre.  It is in our policy for these to stay at home.  This also goes for cordial and fizzy drinks in the children’s drink bottles.  If you could keep this is mind when packing your child’s lunch, it would be much appreciated.
  • Please remember to regularly check your child’s art folder in the foyer and take home their beautiful artwork.
  • Our Governance Committee meetings are held on the third Monday of every month at 7.30pm.  Our next meeting is Monday 21st March.  These are held at the centre and everyone is welcome.

Nursery News

It has been a busy start to the year in the Nursery at Moa Kids.  We have lots of new friends join us and a few children start their learning journey into the preschool.

We have noticed lots of blossoming friendships and positive interactions amongst the children in the nursery.  Everyone becoming familiar with each other and starting to build those meaningful relationships with their peers and also teachers.

The nursery children and teachers took advantage of a quiet morning and headed to the beach to collect drift wood and shells to build their learning nest. The children had an absolute ball at the beach and I think the teachers certainly wore them out as they crashed for big sleeps on their return.  Make sure you check out your child’s egg on the learning nest.

This month we also have a student starting in the nursery for the next 5 weeks.  Aaron grew up in Redcliffs and now lives in Mount Pleasant.  Aaron is really excited at having a placement with us.  He is also looking forward to meeting you all, so make sure you introduce yourself to Aaron.

Preschool News

The preschool room is looking fantastic after its big paint job.  You maybe have noticed the teachers took this opportunity to update all of the wall displays, so please make sure you have a look at these, it will give you a clear understanding of what learning is taking place at Moa kids.

All children will now have their own learning egg displayed on our learning nest in the preschool room.  This explains who their profile book teacher is and also the clear goals they are working on with your child.  Please make sure if you have any questions about this, you have a chat with their profile book teacher.

This year the children will work on a project topic. This topic will be decided, by observing the children’s current interest and ideas.  The teachers have noticed a few areas they are interested in, so will present these to the children for them to decide what they would like explore further.  Watch this space in the next week or so, to see what the children have decided.

The preschool room has had lots of new children start.  It’s great to see them all settled in so well.  We have also welcomed Rosalia and Louis from the nursery, they both are settling in well and, like all nursery children, are enjoying the freedom around art and craft and the water play.

The preschool children are keen bakers, cooks, chefs and over the last few months have been busy baking and making different things.  If you have a recipe the children love to make at home, please make sure you pass it on to us, so we can try it out at the centre.  Also this is a great way to link what happens at home in our preschool environment.

Dolphin Club News

Dolphin club has had a fantastic start to the year.  Shay and Tracy have stepped in to teach while Sharleen is away.  For the first few weeks of the term the children were working on greeting each other, singing the welcome song, learning the days of the week and months of the year, doing a weather check and becoming a group again.

One of our good friends in dolphin club is Russian, so Shay and Tracy have been teaching the children along with Nicholas, how to say hello and also goodbye.  Feel free to try this home with the children.  Hello is ‘’Preevet’’ (pree-vet) and goodbye is ‘’Paka’’ (pa-ka). The children were showing a huge desire for construction which has extended on to castles.  The children have been exploring this by looking at different castles and what they look like.  They now have worked onto building their own castle.  At the weekend a lot of the children met at Creative Junk to work out what resources they would need for their castle and they have now started drawing up plans in what their castle will look like.

Tracy and Shay have also been talking about being a Moa Kids Leader and what this looks like, this is helping to develop the children’s self help skills.

All the children hard work is displayed in the music room, where dolphin club is held.  Please make sure you go see what they have been up to.

Note from Zoe

I would firstly, like to say thank you to you all.  It’s so lovely to see so many happy smiling faces every morning saying hello to me, it brightens my days.

If you are changing hours for your children can you please let Hayley or me know so that we can enter these changes in the system.  For every change we make there will be a form for you to complete, even for temporary bookings, just for Ministry of Education records.  We can print these out immediately so please hang around if you can to sign the form there and then, if not, I will put a note in the sign in book for you to see either Hayley or myself.

We give our thanks to Paula and Simon Standeven of Ray White, who have kindly donated a new emergency mobile phone to Moa Kids.  If your emergency details have changed, or you have moved house recently please let Zoe know.  You are welcome to check what details we have for you and the emergency contacts you have listed.

Please be aware of our new email address.  I did send a bulk email out a couple of weeks ago but there may be someone who has been missed.  If you haven’t received an email from me please let me know and I will make sure you are added to the list.  Our new email address is admin@moakids.org.nz.
