CHAIR’S REPORT (CW)

As a new Chair to the Moa Kids Governance Committee it has been great to be part of a supportive and experienced Committee. I would like to acknowledge the strength, experience and knowledge of the previous Chair, Jason White, who stepped down in February 2017, but remains a valuable member of the committee.

The positive and community focussed environment of Moa Kids is such an asset within the Bays area, and it continues to go from strength to strength as will be shown throughout this report.

Preschool and nursery

It has been a great year across the preschool and nursery with around 40 new children joining the centre. This was balanced across a high number of children, around 30 children, leaving for school. The nursery continues to grow and consequently a permanent staff member was required to maintain the low ratio rates that make Moa Kids a point of difference as a Nursery provider in the area.

The main focus for the last few months has been to increase the number of over 2s in the preschool, and a marketing budget has been agreed with the committee to support this aim.

Community

Being a community preschool, our connections with the wider community are an integral part of the way that we function. We have been developing this community connectedness in a number of ways;

  • Hayley has been out and about attending a number of community meetings, as well as speaking about Moa Kids at the Redcliff’s Residents Association AGM. In addition Moa Kids is strengthening its relationships with local schools.

  • This year Moa Kids has joined the Bridge to Rocks Time Bank as a means of forming greater connections and opening new opportunities for the centre.

  • The community Trikeathon in road safety week raised money for Brake NZ and encouraged children in the community to think about road safety.

  • A stall at the annual Estuary Fest was a way of showcasing what we offer, as well as offering free activities to children at the Festival.

  • A Stall at the opening of the Coastal Pathway Walkway showed our support for this great initiative.

  • The children and teachers were part of the move of children’s books from the old Redcliffs library to the new site, again supporting local organisations.

This continued support for the wider community is an embedded part of who Moa Kids is, and we look forward to new opportunities to connect in the next year.

Fundraising & Grants

It has really been a great year for fundraising, and this is not only due to the fantastic organising skills and leadership of Jude Coombs, who is the lead Fundraiser on the committee, but also due to the contribution from all the parents and the wider community, to which we are very thankful. Fundraising is an essential part of Moa Kids in supporting the children with great resources to challenge their learning and support them with an engaging environment. In addition, the social capital that is developed through the process of fundraising is a real benefit to the wider community; the connections made between the parents, businesses and local organisations is just as valuable as the money that we raise.

Some of the fundraising events we held in the last 12 months have been;

  • School Disco – A community event that is well attended by children of all ages from across the wider Bays area raising $650.

  • Quiz Night – This event in May raised over $700 and proved to be a fun night for all who attended.

  • Second Hand Sale – This raised over $1000 and bargains were had all round.

In terms of Grants, we have received a number of grants, as outlined below, that have supported us across a variety of projects.

It is important to note that although we have been lucky enough to receive the rent rebate in previous years from the Christchurch City Council, going forward this may not always be the case. In the situation that we don’t receive this funding in future years, this cost of rent will need to be absorbed into the general budget of Moa Kids.

Staff

There have been a number of notable staff movements. Firstly, after almost 27 years of caring for and teaching children in Redcliffs, Shelia Robinson retired in June 2016. Sharleen went on parental leave at the end of 2016 and Emily came on board as the break cover, then going on to secure the permanent nursery position. Ali has also joined us, providing exceptional care and teaching to the children. Also, we would like to congratulate Shay who got married in February 2017 in a beautiful ceremony at Ferrymead Heritage Park.

Committee

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the committee for their commitment throughout the year to supporting Moa Kids. The committee continues to work collaboratively with both Hayley and Leitisha, and open communication between the two is representative of a great working relationship between the governance committee and management. The volunteers on the committee show great dedication and the value of the range of skills and experience collectively forms not only an effective committee, but a fun one too.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the fantastic work of Fiona Proudfoot and Rachel Stracey who are now stepping down from the committee after collectively providing 6 years of support and commitment. Their experience, commitment and skills have enhanced the level at which the committee operates, and their support and knowledge will be missed. So, thank you Fiona and Rachel for all that you have done for Moa Kids and the community. I would also like to acknowledge and thank both Jordana Clarke and Jason White who although have stepped down from their roles of Treasurer and Chair Person, but remain on the committee. Thank you Jordana and Jason for the expertise that you provided within these roles. We are also thankful for Steve Wilcox for coming on board as Treasurer.

On this note, we strongly encourage and welcome any parents who may be interested in joining the committee. It is a supported environment and a great opportunity to have your input into the running of your children’s preschool, as well as supporting local community events and organisations. If you have any interest or questions, please just chat to us.

TREASURER’S REPORT (SteveW)

Firstly a big thank you to Jordana Clarke for all her work over the past few years.  I took over in February of this year and have two grandchildren in the preschool.

The audited accounts are available for all to see.  You will see from the accounts that the year to March 2017 was a big improvement over the two previous years which suffered from significant issues as the restructuring took place.

Although 2017 had a small loss of $6k there were good improvements in child numbers and hence Government funding and on their major cost lines (namely reduced staff costs).

However, in the last few years child numbers dropped as older children left for school.  Hayley and her team are working hard on improving this.

We remain in a satisfactory financial position and our aim is to at least break even by end March 2019.

Our rent is fully rebated by Christchurch City Council and any charge to this would affect our financial position.

The full audited accounts are available and are displayed in the foyer.
